The name Stojan Batič holds a distinctive place in Slovenian art. This is not only due to his extensive sculptural oeuvre, which includes public monuments throughout Slovenia, park sculptures, architectural decorations, small-scale sculptures, prints and drawings, but also to his particular affinity for mining themes. In his aesthetically refined sculptures inspired by the world of miners, he reached the highest level of his artistic achievement.

Highly regarded both at home and abroad, Batič established his place in Slovenian sculpture in the second half of the 20th century alongside fellow sculptors such as Savinšek, Tršar, Tihec and others. His broad cultural knowledge and distinctive sensitivity towards people and nature shaped his artistic vision and enduring legacy. More than a decade has passed since his death, yet his monumental public works continue to resonate in the streets and squares of many Slovenian towns and cities.

Stojan Batič remained consistently devoted to the human figure, continually transforming it and enriching it with the experiences gained throughout his long artistic development. His stylistic evolution led him from realism towards a restrained form of modernism, in keeping with the artistic aspirations of his generation of Slovenian sculptors. His oeuvre is distinguished by its wide range of subjects, experimentation with materials and exceptional productivity.

Mining themes occupy a particularly important place in Batič’s artistic work. In the figure of the miner, he found not merely a subject but a distinctive artistic signature. His series of mining-inspired works is considered one of the first comprehensive explorations of this theme in Slovenian art. He transformed the miner of social realism into a contemporary artistic representation of the human condition, revealing the harshness of life and the collective identity of the Zasavje region. His original contribution to Slovenian art was also recognised at the national level when he received the Prešeren Award in 1960.

The retrospective exhibition “Stojan Batič, Sculptor from Trbovlje: 100 Years” presents the key achievements of his sculptural oeuvre. Organised by the Zasavje Museum Trbovlje to mark the centenary of the artist’s birth, the exhibition now comes to the Prešeren Award Winners Gallery in Kranj. Bringing together Batič’s personal and artistic stories, it highlights works from the museum’s collection. The exhibition features a selection of sculptures ranging from his early period to the small-scale works of his mature and later years. Particular emphasis is placed on the Mining Cycle and an overview of the public sculptures that have left a lasting mark on the Zasavje region.
