Photo department of Gorenjska museum is the largest and most regulated in Carniola and is among the largest photo libraries in Slovenia with over 300,000 units: a collection of old original photographs, black and white photographs and negatives, reproductions, slides, a few plates, digital videos and digital photos. The department started to emerge with the establishment of the museum as a result of large-scale museum exhibition and documentary activities, photographs were obtained at field trials and made by museum professionals. Most photographic material was obtained by mapping the original photos sent to us by individuals, rather we get them in other related institutions. Photographic material, which was collected throughout the Gorenjska is intended exhibition, research, teaching and publishing the work of employees, and there is also a number of external users for study and other purposes, as the means of promoting the museum as well as our own cultural heritage. Many photos were acquired through bequests and purchases.
Photographs of the value lies in the content of individual tracks, as such many facilities that are documented in photographs, the only evidence of their original existence. Especially important is the contextual value of the photographs, documenting work, creativity and daily lives of inhabitants of Gorenjska. Photos documenting all areas of urbanism, economy, industry, agriculture, education, etc.. to everyday life. In the past few years, the classic photo almost entirely displaced by digital photography. Two years ago we started with computer processing of materials, the entry into the museum’s GALIS program, which will eventually become photo collection accessible to the public via Internet. We are dealing with digitalization and documentation of individual collections of photographs, we participate in the Kamra and work with City Library Kranj.
